And They Wonder How I Can Be Mennonite AND Pro-Gun

I harboured a secret desire to go to Goshen College, but one visit there taught me that my pro-gun ways were not going to make four years there very comfortable. Since then I've always stuck to my "yes, I am a Peace Church Believer, but I also believe in guns" way of thinking.

This kind of thing is exactly why.

I should probably go re-read Friendly Persuasion.

Trying to follow your logic, Kat. I look at this horrible event and can find no pro-gun reasoning. Are you saying that if say, the teachers had been armed, this would not have occurred? Or been mitigated in some way? I'm always astounded by pro-gun people's assertion that being armed is the answer to protecting your self against crime. I can tell you from personal experience, being shot at has a immediate effect on your ability to think clearly, much less begin to shoot back. I suppose if every armed citizen were to spend months in training, the effect might be less, but when you are dealing with someone who doesn't care if he lives or dies, no amount of training or firepower will level the playing field. I own weapons, but none of them are automatics. I cannot imagine our founding fathers meant that every citizen has a right to own a weapon capable of discharging 30 rounds a second...

A fourth wounded girl just died of her injuries.

I can only be thankful that everyone wasn't armed in this situation. Can you imagine the blood bath if everyone had been shooting?

Logic? The true state of affairs is that the idiots that did the Col., Wisc., and Penn. crimes were crazy! Gun laws, lack thereof, had nothing to do with a crimes like those. Most mass deaths are caused by poisons and fertilizer mixed with diesel fuel. (See: OK City -- World Trade Center I)

Crazy people do bad things. Eliminating fundamental rights of gun ownership would not prevent bell tower crimes.

By the same logic we should sue the fertilizer manufacture and diesel producer for making such a dangerous items.

I know it sounds like the old "Guns don't Kill people, People kill people." The logic behind that saying is 100% true.

Further, I would rather get shot than stabbed to death.

Kathy--Looking more conservative--be careful.

Can you imagine all the live children if an armed security guard had shot the guy in the head before he got to the hostage-takin' part?

You're just saying that because you haven't read the torture entry yet.

Most gun-regulations don't take guns out of the hands of law enforcement officers. That's a red herring.

It's not a red-herring in Amish land, where they don't allow armed law enforcement officers.

Rather be shot than stabbed to death? Ok, maybe, but it takes a whole different kind of person to stab a person, particularly with the intent to kill them. It's a VERY personal kind of attack. Guns are relatively anonymous, that is, there is distance between attacker and victim. And, again, lumping all guns together is irresponsible.

Oh, I forgot, what good would armed police have done in this instance? Is someone promoting the idea of posting armed guards at every school? I'm pretty sure the Amish, even now, perhaps moreso now, would cringe at the idea.

Mr. Mac---

This guy took lubricant with him to commit this crime. Seven year old girls. How much more personal does it need to get. He would have used whatever.

The guy would have killed them slow with a knife and the authorities would not know for hours.

Get real--this guy was crazy--Gun or knife the end result is the same.
