I Need A New Name And Am Open To Suggestions
My name is Katherine. It's one of those names that has 1001 derivations, so every few years I feel free to change it up. To date I've gone by Kathy, Kate, Katherine, Kath, and, most recently, Kat.
"Kat" has stuck, much to the chagrin of those who knew me in the Kathy Days. Thing is, I'm tired of it because it's really an ongoing testament to my laziness. The whole reason I'm going by Kat is because I got so tired of typing "K-a-t-h-e-r-i-n-e" on every comment I made and in every email. But I'm starting to feel like an imposter.
"Kat" is a jaunty name, a devil-may-care, rebellious name. I kind of like it but it's sort of like a tramp stamp. It may have been cute once upon a time, but I feel like maybe I'm too old and wilted to be a Kat.
When we first moved to town my landlady misunderstood my name and called me "Kay" for 9 years afterward. I could never bear to correct her. I've never really liked the name "Kay", but I'm attracted to it because it's even shorter to type than "Kat." Then there's the whole problem with that other Kay... You know. The reviewer. I would hate to steal her thunder.
And K-Co works okay, except that was also the name of the whale in "Free Willy". While I'm not completely ashamed of being a size 2 to the 9th power, I'd really not like to invite the comparison (as Lucille Bluth would say.)
So for now I'm searching for a new handle.

Well, if you feel you are "too old and wilted" to go by Kat, then I suppose Katie is out of the question, but it's the only other derivative of Katherine that I can come up with off the top of my head.
When I was in elementary school I knew a Katherine (actually, I think she was a Catherine) looking for a new name. I suggested Candy, not taking her last name into consideration. It was Cane.
I dunno, Kat seems to me like a television news anchor kinda name, but quirky and fun at the same time.
Maybe Katra, Goddess of the Night? Or, not.
I think, as far as the personality that comes across online, Kat fits perfectly - you don't appear too old and wilted for it to me.
Of course, I guess you could just take the next step and go to Kitty...? Eh, probably not.
No one gets my name either.
I'm a Tracy but for years it's been Trace. My parents would write Trace on Birthday cards and what not.
And believe me, at 41 years old, Tracy is a cheerleader gone to pot name so stereotypical of anyone born in the mid-sixties.
So Trace it is.
I like Kat. I think it's saucy.
I think you should change your name, ala Diana Judd to Naomi, to.......
Lurlene.
And that's why I call you 'Coble,' like you're on my football team. So, go out there and knock some heads, Coble!
Are you wanting to change your "online" name, your real name, or both?
If it's just your blog name, the sky's the limit. You could be whomever you want. Pick a character form Harry Potter or Little House, (or anything else that suits your fancy) and go with it.
But it's hard to find a much more abbreviated name that Kat. Maybe "Mo".
must be nice to be able to change your name like that! "Amy" doesn't exactly lend itself to variations and nicknames :)
even in a post about your name, you cracked me up...I never, ever sounded out "K-Co" and thought of Free Willy :) also, I never thought of "Kat" as a "tramp stamp" either.
how is "Kay" shorter to type than "Kat"? my finger has to exert extra effor to reach that "y" on the keyboard.
anyway, after all that I don't really have any suggestions. I like "Kat".
I guess I'm stuck with "Kat". (sorry, sis)
To answer your question, Amy, if I started going by "Kay", I'd just type "K" and be done with it. It'd be a lot like "V" in V for Vendetta.
So, which one of us in this thread is going to explain "tramp stamp" to my mother?
So I guess it's too late to suggest "K Diddy?"
Damn.
Here kitty, kitty, kitty.
KC
I'd say stick with Kat. Or, go with Kitty and then take it one step further to Pussy - like the mom in "Just Married."
Short & Fat beat me to it... KC. Although now that I think it through, there's the whole Sunshine Band connection.
K-Co it is.
that's what I figured. well, if you go by "K," I think you lose the whole Kay West/Kay Brooks connection. for whatever reason "K" seems totally different than "Kay"--to me, anyway.
by the way...though I have never met you in real life, "old" and "wilted" are two words that have never once come to mind when I think of you :)
Stick with the initial. It works for me.
I was thinking Therine, but now I will suggest "Rin." You know, like how Christopher Grace goes by Topher?
I've never heard of any Katherine going by Rin. It sounds cool to me, kind of sophisticated, kind of rebellious, all at the same time. I think Kat is a bit much, but Rin? That is unusual.
Go with Rin. Or spell it Ryn or something, that's pretty modern.
Kat Fight.
I have a friend that goes by Kat and always gets cat theme presents. So, if you don't mind cat plates, tins and pictures then I say Kat
Kitty Kat? Coble? Mrs. Coble? k.c?
Casey, I fart in your general direction.
Qath?
Thrin?
Wryn?
Funkmaster 3000?
All of the above are pronounced "Throat Wobbler Mangrove"
I consider you lucky. I was just born a "Katie" I get so tired of people asking me my name and then saying "no your full name" I just went rounds on this with the lady at the drivers license place. You could make yourself a KT or a KD, or I always liked Kaydee.
I dunno, but you made a Lucille Bluth reference, so you rock. Perhaps you could be Kob, where, like Gob, it would pronounced with a long "o".
K-Cob. Since Tom-Kat and K-Fed are taken.
I never really liked Kat. I still have the mental picture of that dark oak "KATHY" in your bedroom.
I think you should inflect some of your middle name into things. Initials always make good starting points, in my humble opinion.
"K Jo" Sounds like an up and coming Hollywood partygirl (L Lo or J Lo)
"KJ Coble" sounds like an erudite authoress (TS Elliot)
I will say that I like "rin" for Katherine.
If it helps, I have a former boss who is around mid-50s, and she goes by Cat, and it totally works for her. She's a fun kind of gal.
I like K-Tel... like K-Tel Records or K-Tells All or K (tell me more... bloggers wanna know)...
Say K-Tel out loud a few times - has a pep to the pronunciation, me thinks...
Well, send me a few pics, some nakey; and I'll give it a go.
As a fellow Kat, my standard intro is something along the lines of "I'm Katharine. Also Kat, Kitty, anything feline related. Pussy, if you must."
I never really dubbed myself Kat... it just seemed to appear one day when I was 11. Although 7 years later, it seems like everyone is Kat these days. O.o
